Small wins

Back starting in 2020, we transferred many of our health care providers to our neighbourhood. Before that, I really didn't even realize that was an option. So many small businesses were invisible to me. Now we have two pharmacies, two dentists and a physiotherapist that we feel comfortable with, all within walking distance. Even so, today I had an internal battle between walking and driving to the dentist. Thankfully, walking won out. I was able to see kids biking and talking, notice beautiful yards and have a longer conversation with one of my children. The brain pathway that defaults to driving is strong but new brain pathways are only made one way: changing my behaviour. Small win today.

This week, Councillor Aaron Paquette came out with a new explainer on fiscally conservative transportation. As usual, it's excellent work. As I wrote last week, I'll be sharing things I'm reading a little more as we move into fall.

At the bottom of this newsletter, is an invitation to join me for outdoor coffee on September 19th. The image above is part of me getting ready. I hope to see you then!

September 4th - 4:00-5:30 pm

No bike needed for this community meet-up. Join other community members for a freezie and an informal visit. Postcards for Minister of Transportation Dreeshan will be available for signing for those wanting to signal how bike lanes make your life better.

Packingtown Bike Club

September 5th - 1:00 pm - meet at the Canco Station (132 Ave & 66 St) Drop-in ride; all ages and abilities.

With the UCP threatening legislation to block and remove bike lanes, Edmonton riders are demonstrating this week what driving would be like, without bike lanes. It's easy to imagine on 144 Avenue. I remember a former northside councillor being proud of blocking bike infrastructure on 144 Avenue as part of his legacy. Unlike our usual rides to explore and celebrate new bike lanes, this week we'll be taking the lane. Look for route and weather updates here.

Saturday Morning Coffee

September 19th - 9 am @ Glengarry Park; coffee, tea, doughnuts and cinnamon twists provided. Reply to this email by September 18th to RSVP and receive the exact location.

I started this newsletter off in the spring by talking about my favourite word: fecund. Boy, does it sure apply this week, simply teeming because Alberta leadership has been flooding the zone. And the rest of us are left to clean up the mess. The forced reversal on the zoning bylaw and the referendum conversations are essentially the same but at different scale. We are at a crossroads on who we are becoming; a welcoming city and province or one that pulls up the drawbridge and only allows...

After years, no decades, of waiting for a non-chain coffee shop to open in the north east, imagine my surprise at discovering two in ward tastawiniyiwak in the last 4 days. I hear there is actually a third, which I haven't visited yet. When I first moved to Edmonton as teenager in the 90s, my parents wouldn't let me drive south of the Yellowhead. My sister and I scoured the Yellow Pages for any place with "cafe" in it's name, to only find a bar right off Yellowhead Trail. Then in the early...

It's been a year since the municipal election. Last night, I felt just like I was running again because there is no shortage of important work to show up for. Below are some opportunities in north Edmonton. Packingtown Bike Club September 26th - 1:00 pm - meet at the Canco Station (132 Ave & 66 St) Drop-in ride; all ages and abilities. Ride to Giovanni Caboto Park with possible stops at Earth's Refillery Coop and Cafe, Paper Birch Books and other shops depending on interest. Look for route...
