Get the Job Done!

After years, no decades, of waiting for a non-chain coffee shop to open in the north east, imagine my surprise at discovering two in ward tastawiniyiwak in the last 4 days. I hear there is actually a third, which I haven't visited yet.

When I first moved to Edmonton as teenager in the 90s, my parents wouldn't let me drive south of the Yellowhead. My sister and I scoured the Yellow Pages for any place with "cafe" in it's name, to only find a bar right off Yellowhead Trail.

Then in the early aughts, I remember 3 Starbucks piling up at the intersection of 137 Ave. and 97 St, as if there was a force field of fear preventing any further movement east. There was one great place on 50 St. and 129 Ave. but it has been long closed. If you remember the name of it, let me know. The new cafes have been added to my Hidden Gems map.

From all I can gather, all three new cafes have been opened by immigrants. Is it cliche to quote "Immigrants! They get the job done!"? Yes, it probably is but only because its a truism.

All this to say, I'm voting No to the 9, yes/no questions on the referendum ballot and to remaining in Canada. I think it's safe to say that if you are still reading this newsletter, we are on the same page but with so much at stake, I don't want to leave any vote on the table.

Join me in the coming weeks, to get as much of the vote out as we can, to put this divisive issue to rest, so that we can focus on the things that will actually make life better for us all.

Packingtown Bike Club

October 3rd - 1:00 pm - meet at the Canco Station (132 Ave & 66 St) Drop-in ride; all ages and abilities.

Ride to Beaumaris Lake for our last ride of the year! This will be a bit longer of a route than usual but so beautiful this time of year. We'll ride past the maple trees on 97th Street, to catch a group photo. Look for route and weather updates here

There are many other days, than the above example, and other opportunities, both at the doors and on the phone, for volunteering in Edmonton-Decore to help get out the vote for referendum day. Unlike volunteering with other pro-Canada groups, volunteering with the NDP additionally helps position them for the general election next year. Two birds with one stone, so to say.

Reply to this email for the location of this referendum rally. Attend to make visible your support for your immigrant neighbours and for the unity of the country.

I started this newsletter off in the spring by talking about my favourite word: fecund. Boy, does it sure apply this week, simply teeming because Alberta leadership has been flooding the zone. And the rest of us are left to clean up the mess. The forced reversal on the zoning bylaw and the referendum conversations are essentially the same but at different scale. We are at a crossroads on who we are becoming; a welcoming city and province or one that pulls up the drawbridge and only allows...

It's been a year since the municipal election. Last night, I felt just like I was running again because there is no shortage of important work to show up for. Below are some opportunities in north Edmonton. Packingtown Bike Club September 26th - 1:00 pm - meet at the Canco Station (132 Ave & 66 St) Drop-in ride; all ages and abilities. Ride to Giovanni Caboto Park with possible stops at Earth's Refillery Coop and Cafe, Paper Birch Books and other shops depending on interest. Look for route...

A bike with basket and saddlebags.

I recently got a new basket and reinstalled my saddlebags on my bike. Without them, there was an additional friction to using my bike for errands. Even so, I still had to convince myself to ride to the store and back when we were running out of bread last week. The total trip took only 29 min but even more important were the human connections that I made in those short 29 minutes. I met and chatted with a junior high student from my workplace, who was unlocking his bike at the same time as...
