Held by the Land and Each Other

Earlier this summer, I read a news story about an artist in Saskatchewan dropping her phone out of the plane that her husband was flying, while she was trying to capture images of Saskatchewan landscapes. I wanted to see her work, so looked up her website and immediately started sobbing at the images I saw. I was hit with recollections of the place that first held me and the people who first held me there.

Lately, in this place that should be home, I feel more like I'm doing the holding. Many of us are trying to hold children, the disabled, the sick, the immigrant, our houses and households, the country and the climate together while those we've entrusted with leadership are working against us.

Those landscape images were a reminder to me that there are times to hold and there are times to be held and it's important to know when each is required.

As I transition away from summer and back into full-time employment, I will need to find more of those times to be held and this newsletter will likely change. I have ideas for sharing the work of others that I find both informative and inspiring. I expect I will have less events to share but maybe we'll need those in the coming months, as gathering places to hold each other while we hold what's important together.

It's a critical time for a critical mass! Last month around 100 people gathered to ride. Let's make this month's ride even bigger. Details here.

I started this newsletter off in the spring by talking about my favourite word: fecund. Boy, does it sure apply this week, simply teeming because Alberta leadership has been flooding the zone. And the rest of us are left to clean up the mess. The forced reversal on the zoning bylaw and the referendum conversations are essentially the same but at different scale. We are at a crossroads on who we are becoming; a welcoming city and province or one that pulls up the drawbridge and only allows...

After years, no decades, of waiting for a non-chain coffee shop to open in the north east, imagine my surprise at discovering two in ward tastawiniyiwak in the last 4 days. I hear there is actually a third, which I haven't visited yet. When I first moved to Edmonton as teenager in the 90s, my parents wouldn't let me drive south of the Yellowhead. My sister and I scoured the Yellow Pages for any place with "cafe" in it's name, to only find a bar right off Yellowhead Trail. Then in the early...

It's been a year since the municipal election. Last night, I felt just like I was running again because there is no shortage of important work to show up for. Below are some opportunities in north Edmonton. Packingtown Bike Club September 26th - 1:00 pm - meet at the Canco Station (132 Ave & 66 St) Drop-in ride; all ages and abilities. Ride to Giovanni Caboto Park with possible stops at Earth's Refillery Coop and Cafe, Paper Birch Books and other shops depending on interest. Look for route...
